Computer Ethics

Homework Assignment 5

Business Ethics Policies

Step 1: Obtain a copy of a business ethics policy from each of two different businesses, one of which is a technology company and the other which is not a techology company. When you obtain the copies: a) be sure the policy is not protected by confidentiality obligations; and b) if the policy is not publicly available on a Website, ask whether you can make a copy for discussion in class. Typically, a business ethics policy is called “Ethics Policy”, “Code of Ethics”, “Code of Conduct”, “Core Values”, or something similar. It may be a stand-alone document or part of an employee handbook. You can start your search for a business ethics policy online, but remember that you will have to contact someone who works for that company for an interview (in Step 2).

Step 2: Interview someone at the company (could be someone you already know or try contacting the public relations department or the human resources department) about the ethics policy and ask:

  • do they have ethics training (how often done; are records kept; what is involved in the training).
  • does an employee have to sign anything?
  • Is there someone in charge of enforcing the ethics policy and investigating violations?

Step 3: Write a memo discussing comparing and contrasting the two policies and practices. Attach a copy of each of the two policies to your memo (you only need to make one copy of each policy). Bring memo and policies to class.

SPECIAL NOTE: Start this assignment early, as you will reduce your likelihood of completing the assignment if you wait until the day before it is due! You need to factor in time to seek alternative companies if you are unable to find someone to interview at the first company you contact. You may get some reluctance or even resistance from persons you do not know. You will increase your likelihood of cooperation if you explain to them that you are seeking this information as a homework assignment for your college course (and reference this Web page if necessary).
