Computer Ethics

Assignment 13

Digital Inclusion - is there still a Divide?

This assignment requires you to provide volunteer services for at least four (4) hours with a nonprofit, church, or educational institution in the Atlanta metropolitan area that provides technology assistance to those who are in lower-income families or who require assistive technology (for example for a physical handicap). If you are unable to perform this community service because of extraordinary time constraints, you may request an alternative assignment from the instructor.

Part 1 - on or before October 19, 2007 at Class 10, send an email to the instructor with the name of the organization and a brief description of the project. The instructor will respond and let you know whether the project is approved (if it is not approved, you may need to identify another nonprofit or project). If you do not already know of an organization that meets the criteria, try starting with Hands On Atlanta Projects that work on the Digital Divide - www.handsonatlanta.org.

Part Two - Prepare a five minute presentation for the class to describe your experience and answer the following questions:

  1. For which organization did you volunteer?
  2. What challenges do their clients have with respect to technology? How does the organization serve its clients with respect to technology assistance?
  3. Describe your experience.
  4. Do you think the organization's efforts successfully meet their clients' challenges? What could they do to improve?
  5. What surprised you most about your experience?

Your presentation should include 5 Powerpoint slides to help illustrate your discussion points. Remember, you have only 5 minutes, so keep it succinct! A picture can tell a thousand words!
